10th Century Clothing

Viking Shoes, made on 10-24-2007

James and Kimberly both made a pair of these shoes found in Hedeby based off the pattern and picture on the Vikings UK shoe page it is pattern number four. We used 8oz veg tanned cow leather for the bottom and 4oz for the uppers. We finished them with neatsfoot oil and and final coat of 60% neatsfoot oil and 40% beeswax to help protect them from water.

Stepping Through Time and Die Lederfunde von Haithabu have several pairs of boots from the Hedeby finds in them; James made this pair based off one of the patterns and wore it boar hunting at the Norstead grand opening. James used 8oz veg tanned cow leather for the bottom and 2oz veg tanned goat skin for the uppers. The toggles are made of 4 oz cow leather. He finished them with neatsfoot oil and and final coat of 60% neatsfoot oil and 40% beeswax to help protect them from water.

Wealthy Viking Trader with Rus Clothing, made on 2-10-2007

Trading centers in the Viking era like Birka and Hedeby often have items of Russian or Slavic origin in wealthy men's graves. This does not make this style of clothing common; tighter fitting trousers and tunics are still much more likely to be found.

  • Red wool kaftan based on Birka and Hedeby finds
  • Green wool trousers, speculation based off of Hedeby fragments
  • Yellow wool Birka style hat with blue/yellow/brown wool tablet woven trim
  • Shoes are Norman shoes from the early 12th century. I have plans to make an early 11th c shoe soon.

  • Silver belt fittings from Quitepress
  • Silver Thor's hammer from Thor Thor's Hammer While pagans still were around Christianity was much more common so I will likely replace the Thor's hammer with a Viking era cross.
  • Leather draw string pouch made from 2oz goatskin

Viking Female, 10th C Hedeby, made on 1-22-2007

I have no proper place for this right now, will change my website soon. Kim made this 10th century Hedeby outfit for herself:

  • A linen head wrap
  • A linen under tunic
  • A yellow worsted wool dress is based on the Birka tunic
  • A green apron dress based on the Hedeby dress
  • A dark brown Kaftan also based on the Birka tunic pattern
  • Brooches are silver plated Quitepress broaches and the beads come from all over
  • Shoes are Norman shoes, "Viking" era shoes coming soon.
