16th Century Clothing

Tudor Outfits 1-10-09

James and Kimberly both wore a Tudor outfit for 12th night. Each worked on their own outfit.

Kimberly's outfit is made out of gold silk and lined and/or interlined in black linen. The front panel of the skirt and sleeves were beaded by hand with gold glass seed beads onto a cotton velveteen. The design, pattern, and fitting for the outfit is her own.

Outfit has the following parts: Chemise, corset, dress, decorative sleeves, front panel, corset is linen with reeds in the channels for support. Lacing string for the dress is gold silk that had been fingerloop braided in a five strand braid. All visible stitching was done with linen or silk thred

Here we are together:

James's outfit is a set of hose, a doublet (not new), a Tudor style gown, a silk sash, and a set of Tudor shoes (section below has the shoe details. The hose are made of yellow wool with black silk satin details on the cod piece. Kimberly helped with the fitting of the hose. The gown is black silk satin on the outside with a plain black silk on the inside; the construction is based off several images of men in the 1530s wearing long sleeves gowns with ball/bell shoulders. The sash is gold silk. All visible seams are hand sewn with linen or silk thread. Patterns for the clothing drafted by James.

Tudor Shoe January 7, 2009 This shoe is based on an extant example in "Stepping Through Time" on page 226 and is decorated to match a pair of the same shape worn by Henry VIII. These shoes are constructed with a welted sole. The heel is in two pieces to curve with the back of the heel and has a reinforcement in the heel as well as a piping at the top. The reinforcement is done with a tunnel stitch so the stitch does not show on the outside and the piping is first flesh edge stitched to the top of the heel and then tunnel stitched to the inside of the leather. A piping extends into the vamp and is tunnel stitched to it to strengthen the opening. Currently the shoes do not have the second sole attached:

16th Century Pouch

This purse made by James is inspired by historical remains and the drawing "A Nuremburg woman in house dress" by Albrecht Dürer, c. 1500-1501. The backing is a 4oz cowhide, the front of the pouch and pouchlets are 2 oz goatskin. The leather was embossed by hand.

Baron Jürgen van der Vols - Upperclass German (2-08)

Baron Jürgen is the new Baron of Ponte Alto in Atlantia (SCA in Northern VA). The doublet and gown are made by James. The outfit is based off patterns of like doublets with some slight alterations to get the look seen in artwork of the time. The hat is of my own design based of period art.

Kevin Houghton's Outfit (2002)

This project was done a while back, sometime in 2002. Kevin is wearing a pair of paned slops, they are red cotton brocade for the back of the pane and the underneath and black cotton brocade on the outside, and the interior lining is black linen. The jerkin is the same black and red brocades with a white fake lace trim and a dark blue-gray silk lining. I will later finish the outfit with a matching red brocade doublet.

The jerkin was made from an altered version of the Period Patterns "Dashing Doublets". The panned slops were made from a pattern in Janet Arnold's book "Patterns of Fashion: The Cut and Construction of Clothes for Men and Women C1560-1620".
